I’m no dietician or nutritionist, but I am not at all surprised by this article which refers to a study linking a poor diet to poor mental health and in particular, depression. This study suggests that a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, and low fat, unprocessed foods, may be as important to your mental health as it is to cardiovascular health and other areas of your bodily system. However, we must be careful to resist solely blaming personal “free choice” for poor diets. Socioeconomics and multi-million dollar marketing influence ideas, opinions, availability and store positioning. Until the playing field is more even, we may have a tough time changing poor broadly based eating patterns that impact our physical and mental health.
